2011年4月より第2代研究科委員長を仰せつかりました 前野隆司です。在校生は特に新年度の開始に当たり一堂に 会する機会もありませんので、この節目に、ぜひオール SDMの皆様にメッセージを、と思い、メールいたしました。 Let me send you my message. English version is at the end.
1. New Beginnings First off, I want to give my deepest condolences to those who have been affected by the recent disaster caused by the earthquake and tsunami. I wish everyone a speedy recovery and mending of the heart. If there is any assistance that SDM or I can offer, please do not be afraid to reach out to us. We would love to help you out in any form. Leading up to March 11th, Japan was facing many economic and political challenges. On that fateful afternoon, a crisis that overshadows all other issues occurred. Hard times are far from over and we will face one of the hardest times as an individual, community member, and as a nation. And during these hardships, are we to retreat into our homes and watch? I do not believe so. I believe that by facing these challenges head on and overcoming adversity, we will emerge as a stronger community, nation and the world. I believe that we, at SDM, should be in the forefront of rebuilding our nation and the world through innovative social and technical systems. I believe that we need to work together to make a better nation and the world.
2. SDM has tools and resources When I say, “rebuild our nation and world”, it sounds like a very daunting task. However, I believe SDM possess the methodology, technique, capable people and global network needed to achieve this goal. From the foundations of system engineering, to the endless potential of the ALPS program, we are presented with the opportunity to impact the world in a positive manner. I sincerely believe that with confidence, collaboration, and creativity, SDM will be a huge factor in rebuilding our nation and world. Going into the 4th year since the inauguration of the SDM program, this seems like the appropriate mindset.
3. What can you do for SDM? To achieve our goal, you should have full faith and trust in the potential of SDM. Imagine an SDM community where each student’s attitude is to “build a better SDM”. Similar to what former President John F. Kennedy said, ask not what SDM can do for you, ask what you can do for SDM. SDM draws its strength from our diverse students and diverse opportunities. By combining these resources, I have confidence that we will achieve unprecedented tasks and shock the world. So remember to always think about “What can I do for SDM?” , “What can I do for the nation and the world?”
4. Positivity As a community, let us always keep a positive attitude and look forward to the future. Of course, I am not expecting our program to be perfect in just four years, but if you find issues with any aspect of SDM, remember to have constructive criticism rather than just complaints. Remember that I am always open to discussing these issues with you.
5. Summary To summarize: ・It is unfortunate that we must start the school year in a grim atmosphere, but consider this as a new beginning and grasp all of the opportunities presented in the new school year. ・By working together we will be able to achieve the unachievable. ・Remember to be positive about everything and feel free to discuss any issues with me.
I look forward to interacting with all of the students and faculty in the upcoming school year. Prof. Maeno, Takashi. Dean of SDM, Keio University
